Most ranches have a spot where the phone gives up: the back pasture, the bottom of the draw, the calving barn with the steel roof. A ranch app that works offline matters because that is exactly where the work happens. Cloud mode, part of CowSync 2.0, lets you keep logging treatments, calvings and weights with no signal, and sends everything up when you are back in range.
Here is how it works, what to do before you head out, and what still needs a connection.
How Cloud mode works
CowSync keeps a copy of your records on your phone, tablet or computer. While Cloud mode is on, every change you make is saved on the device and waits there. When you are back online, those waiting changes are sent to CowSync. That is called syncing. After a sync, your other devices and your team see the changes too.
The cloud button sits in the strip at the top of every page, next to the temperature. When everything is online and synced, it shows a plain cloud with a small green dot.
It turns on by itself
If the signal drops, CowSync switches to Cloud mode and tells you: "No signal โ Cloud mode is on. Keep working; changes sync when you reconnect." When the signal comes back, it turns off and syncs on its own.
Or you can turn it on by hand
When the signal is weak and slow, which is often worse than none at all, tap the cloud button and switch Cloud mode on. CowSync stops waiting on the connection, which also saves data and battery. Switch it off to sync.
While it is on, the button turns amber, reads Cloud mode, and shows how many changes are waiting.
Before you head out: the offline checklist
- While you still have good signal, at the house or in the truck, tap the cloud button.
- Tap Save copy to device. It reads Update device copy once you have one.
- Wait for the message that tells you how many records were saved on the device.
- Leave Keep the device copy fresh switched on, so CowSync updates the copy in the background about every 12 hours and again after you reconnect.
- Head out and keep working as normal.
- When you are back in signal, check that the waiting count goes to zero.
On a phone, it helps to add CowSync to your home screen so it opens like an app. The phone and tablet page shows how for iPhone and Android.
What a ranch app that works offline can and can't do
In Cloud mode, these keep working:
- Every Workspace tool: Herd Health, Heat & AI, preg checks and calving, weights, observations, feed and the rest
- Notes, spreadsheets and the calendar
- The daily briefing
- My Herd
- Saved files under 3 MB
These need a connection:
- AI features, including the AI assistant, receipt reading and CowGPT
- Share and signing links, and uploads
- Maps and weather (you will see the last saved forecast)
- The Predictor, Mating Planner, Simulator, auction tools and Leaderboard
- Account settings
- Sending messages (you can still read chats you have already opened)
If you open a page that needs a connection, it tells you so and offers a button back to the Workspace.
Reading the Cloud mode panel
Tap the cloud button to open the panel. It shows:
- On device: how many records are saved on this device
- Device copy: when it was last saved. It says "up to date" within a day and "getting old" after that.
- To sync: how many changes are waiting, each listed as New, Edited or Deleted with the tool it belongs to
- Storage on this device: how much room the copy takes
The Sync button sends waiting changes right away when you are online.
A few good habits
- Save a fresh copy before a long day out. It takes a minute and means the records you need are on the phone.
- Sync before you sign out. The device copy is removed when you sign out. If changes have not synced yet, CowSync warns you first.
- Log at the chute. With Cloud mode, there is no reason to wait until you get home. Records written on the spot are the most accurate ones, and the record tools let you save one record for a whole pen at once.
- Check the waiting count when you drive back into signal, so you know everything went up.
Keep working wherever the work is
Signal should not decide when your records get written. To read the full details, see the Cloud mode page in the CowSync Guide, then save a copy to your phone before your next trip to the back pasture.
Frequently asked questions
Does CowSync work with no signal at all?
Yes. Cloud mode saves your changes on the phone, tablet or computer and syncs them when you reconnect. Save a copy to the device while you have signal for the best results.
What happens to changes made offline?
They wait on the device and are sent to CowSync as soon as you are back online. The cloud button shows how many are waiting, and your team sees them after the sync.
Do I need to download an app from the app store?
No. CowSync runs in your phone's web browser, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app.
